      • 1 introduction

      • 2 User-defined functions

      • 3 Contol-flow statements

      • 4 Arrays

      • 5 Objects

      1 Introduction

      Sub Name [(Arguments)(As type)]
      [Statements]
      End Sub

      其中arguments和as type都可以没有定义

      举例:输入名字并返回:

      Sub Name()
      Name=inputbox("Enter your name:")
      Msgbox("My name is " & Name & ".")
      End Sub

      2 User-Defined Functions

      • Declaring constant

      在模块的开始,我们申明变量之后,下面的sub都可以使用这些变量,如果没有申明的话,sub之间不同变量(如果有相同名称)不会有影响。

      Const name[As Type] = value
      PublicConst name[As Type] = value

      • Declare variable

      一定要先declare variable后写,不然默认为variant(既可以是文本,也可以是数据),后面代码写好后会出现问题。

      Dim variable_name as Type

      • Function

      就像python一样,写好function后面可以在任意sub里面调用,方便快捷。

      Function name([Arg 1 as Type 1, Arg 2 as Type 2...])[As Type]
      [Statements]
      name = expression
      End Function

      举个栗子:三个数的加和

Function Sum3Numbers(a as Double, b as Double, c as Double)
      Sum3Numbers = a + b + c
      End Function

      VBA的内置函数

      如果需要调用Excel内置的函数:

      Application.WorksheetFunction.(function)

      3 Control-Flow Statements

      • 常用operators

      1)if

就是if, then, else, else if, end if叠加。

      Type 1: one line syntax
result = iif (statement, statement if true, statement if false)

      Type 2: one line if
if (condition) Then (result = value if true) Else (result = value if false)

      Type 3: if Syntax
      If (condition) Then
      [Statement]
      Else if (condition2) Then
      [Statement]
      Else
      [Statement]
      End if

      2)Select case

      Select Case (test variable)
      Case (expression)
      [Statement]
      Case Else (expression)
      [else statement]
      End Select

      3)Do...Loop

      4)For...Next Loop

      4 Arrays

      • Declare an array

Dim Arr(3) as Double/ Variant...

      • Dynamic Array

      • Multidimensional array

      • Size of the array

      UBound(Arr)
      LBound(Arr)

      5 Objects

      https://pan.baidu.com/s/1b2xC-x_CWqnd1KDCNv0kCA

Company;Role;Deadline;Action;Stage;link of description;link of application;Account;PassWord;extra info

      • why this company

      • why this position

      • why you

Pre, motivational and value-based question。

      • An example of a mathematical project

      • An example of teamwork

      • How to explain Markov Chain to CEO

      • How to explain Bayesian Theory to CEO

      1 One academic project experience

      2 Understanding of actuarial consultant

      3 Struggle project & 3 strength

      4 Career aspiration

5 Work hard to do my best

      6 Very creative idea

7 Poor group work & how to fix it

      8 Learn new things

      9 Example of adaptability

10 How people talk about your personal brand

      11 Good teamwork

      12 Multitask

      13 Why Deloitte

      14 One achievement

      15 Life goal

      16 Agility

      show motivation: research!!!

Strategy!

      Quant, Data Scientist

      • Quant:

      • Data Scientist:侧重Data Manipulation(金融知识不够)

      • Actuary:结合各种skills: Modelling skills, communication, predict the future

      Actuaries of the future

      RMS strategy

      • 1)Audit Support (Specilist,Statement of Actuarial Opinion):

      • 2)Non Audit:

Python replicate SAS model

      • 1)Life:

      • 2)GI: liability insurance

        • Audit Support: SAO (Statement of Actuarial Opinion)

      IFRS 17: Insurance Contracts

      IFRS 17 amendments approved

      • 3)Banking:

      • 4)Corporate:

      • Brexit

      需要提一个点+展开:work through logical process

      therefore,….

    • PwC Actuarial Service Grad AC+Senior面+Par面

      • 1 why actuary

      • 2 why PwC

      • 3 how PwC help other businesses

      • 4 market sizing question: estimate the sandwich market in the uk per year

      • 5 Q&A

      群面千万不要dominate要听取大家的意见(不要直接说guys, we should use emerging tech……

      3 Feedback

      4 Par

      • 1 self-introduction

      • 2 tell me how to explain a complex concept in a simple term?

      • 3 tell me what have you learnt in the past 6 months?

      • 4 how to build relationships with others?

      • 5 Q&A

      3 Risk Quant

      5 Women in ETF -

WP ALM & BSM team (With Profit Asset and Liability Management & Balance Sheet Management),但尴尬的情况是我的大部分工作(为一个很大的project工作)是在旁边的WP Management team。

      LBG Graduate Scheme

他说:you are too young to make a mistake.

Tips:

      • 2-申不上没啥,大不了回国

      不要太焦虑,我有一次AC就是因为跑得太远,然后焦虑得不行不行的,所以发挥得不是很好,然后就狗带了。

      一定放轻松,有一种老娘最牛逼的气场。

      还有就是耐心,申请是一个长长的过程。

      有些朋友填了两个表格觉得累,然后不申了;

      做了两个test,fail,然后溜了;

      网面/电面没过,又丧了,不继续申了;

      一个AC没过,开始怀疑人生,然后就觉得这地方跟自己犯冲,然后拜拜。

      之前我也不是没有这个心态,当自己申了20个项目,10个进了网面,只有3个进了AC后,心态是有点崩的。

      但当和本地人聊了后,发现这个是个正常的概率,本地人都这样,你为什么觉得你自己一定会百发百中呢?

      当然,我认识有个小姐姐只申了五个项目,然后2个AC,第一个AC就过了这种厉害的情况......

      所以,平常心。

      2、了解申请套路

      对于普通公司(非投行咨询等n轮的公司,但我也只申过bank, actuary, insurance, risk)

      就是:

      网申表格 --> 网上测试(verbal, quantitative, situational judgement) --> 网面/电面 --> AC面

      具体的步骤我都有写过,可以戳我的专栏看。

      然后下面简略地说说技巧:

      • 第一步:耐心填表格

      • 第二步:刷题然后总结

      • 第三步:准备interview题目,并录下来练习和修改

      • 第四步:多练,多准备,自信

      我之前走过几个误区,跟大家提提:

      • 1-interview就大概写几个bullet points,也不会练

      一定一定要录下来好吗?

      关键不在于内容,如果是网面,注意自己的表情,当我开始录下来后,发现自己嘴巴说话的时候是歪的,眉毛喜欢轻蔑地上翘,然后发觉就把他改过来了。

      • 2-慢下来!!!!!!

      一定要慢慢地,一步一步地吐字清楚!!

      我跟很多导师练过,每次的问题,最大的就是太!快!了!

      真的,我们没有自己想象中说得那么好,当你说快了,本地人并不会听清楚

      • 3-练练练

      无论是presentation还是case study还是group,都是熟能生巧的,不要觉得麻烦然后就不练了,真的得练。

      3、最后

      我觉得,这两年的经历不仅仅是把interview练熟或者是自己英语更加好或者presentation更棒了。

      我觉得我提升最高的就是自己抗压能力,当面试或者AC没过时,我会很丧,会想老娘是不是那么弱所以过不了,然后旁边牛逼的同学过了又增加了无形的压力。

      有一个月,加上学习和申请学校的压力,我觉得自己都要被压垮了。

      但现在想想,挺好的,真的是一份宝贵的经历。

      希望大家都能拿到自己喜欢的offer!

    • Lloyds Banking Group AC + interview

      又申请Actuarial Summer Intern,去年AC没过,希望今年会好点~

      这次又约了一个新的导师来面试~给了一些新的想法,希望会有收获~

      最近发现了,如果在AC中收紧核心挺胸抬头+微笑+高跟,整个人气场就会变~

      一 AC

      1、架构

      今年变了,从去年很轻松的状态换成比较紧张的筛选graduate的AC

      流程由以下,16个人分为四组,分别完成不同的任务:

      • Presentation

      • Strength based interview

      • Small task

      • Interview

      • Group Exercise1

      • Group Exercise2

      2、问题:

      presentation

      • How you approach the presentation?

      • How you analyse it?

      strength based interview

      • What is your biggest achievement?

      • Do you describe yourself include others?

      • Do you describe yourself enjoy challenges?

      • How to be Customer first?

      small task

      • How many motor cars replace by driverless car in the uk?

      • How does it impact Lloyd’s banking group?

      • How does it accord to Customer First?

      interview

      • Highlight achievements in your CV?

      • Why lbg?

      • Trend for insurance company?

      • What are the competitors?

      • Biggest competitor?

      • What is the challenges for lbg?

      • How to make lbg better for customer first?

      group exercise

      • combine how to manage risk

Interview

Try to focus as much as you can on the uniqueness of your answers and try to always relate them back to the role for which you are applying.

If interviewers can see that you are:

      • standing out from the crowd;

      • showing an understanding of the role and the business;

then you are in a very strong position.

      • Research Lloyds as much as you can. Look at the annual review and the website.

      https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/globalassets/documents/investors/2016/2016_lbg_annual_review.pdf

      • Try to plot the recent history of the group, as it received a massive government bail out after the financial crisis

      http://www.eiu.com/industry/article/1845659168/lloyds-bank-announces-management-shakeup/2017-07-06

      https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2017/05/20/the-british-government-sells-its-last-shares-in-lloyds-bank

Lloyds Bank returns to private ownership

      • Make sure that you know your short-term career plan, especially with regard to the actuary qualifications.

      • Building on the risk question we talked through, make sure that you have done plenty of research around the technological aspects as this is one of the greatest risks/opportunities for the financial industry.

      • Also, do think more about Brexit and the political situation in the UK as they do seem to be very focused on their local market, hence these factors will weigh heavily on the management team.

Now to the individual questions that we talked through. My observations were as follows:

1 Can you tell me about your previous work experience?

This was a good answer drawing on your work at Huatai and the People’s Insurance Company. Do remember to include the ‘softer’ elements of your experience as well as the technical elements that you learned.

We talked about you witnessing the conflict between business managers and the actuaries, and then the breadth of analysis required when presenting new products to the regulator.

2 Why do you want to work as an actuary?

You gave a good answer, just slow down the delivery.

      3 What's your career plan?

As I mentioned above, make sure that you have this clear in your mind for the short-term.

4 What's your view on the future economic position of the UK?

I liked the addition of the sociological points around population.

5 What potential risks does Lloyds face and discuss the impact of these?

Use your research to build on your answer to this question.

      economy, sociology, technology和politic

6 Tell me about your experience of leading a team.

This was your story about being the leader of the communication division. The example is good and your inclusion of your reflections is also good. Try to deal with the Situation and Task elements quickly, thus leaving more time to talk about the Action and Result. Remember to keep your delivery calm and even.

7 Tell me about your experience of working within a team competency.

This was your story about the maths competition which was excellent together with your analysis of what you would do differently now.

8 Tell me about what kind of feedback you have received in the workplace.

Again a good answer but try to work on the areas for improvement.

      • Ask more questions for tasks to get more understanding - attendency to say "yes" to others; intimidate to ask more questions to things I am not familiar with - research more and ask questions - take a step back; ask questions: spending time simplified things at first

      • More programming languages: self-learning

      Lloyds Banking Group plc

Which of the following best describes your, and why? Spending time simplifying things in advance, or clarifying things if people request it?

Commercial awareness – Lloyds Banking Group

      • I think you have enough knowledge now about the business and how it operates. Considering that the conversation is for only 30 minutes it is unlikely that you will get into a lot of depth around this or any topic for that matter. Focus on the key points around:

        • The company’s history, from bail-out to growth and profitability now;

        • Its technology investment and therefore strong position to serve its customers economically and with excellence;

        • Its UK focus and therefore the risk/opportunity presented by Brexit.

      Career Plan

      • This was a clear and concise answer: year 1 focus on building a range of experience to decide upon the area of specialisation and completing the associate qualification; year 2-3 specialise in your chosen domain and complete the full qualification.

      Technology for Actuaries

      • We talked around this subject exploring the potential impact that certain technologies will have on the profession e.g. AI, machine learning. You can never read enough around such a topic, so dip into the Big 4 websites to find more insights

      Actuarial

      Strengths

      • Positive outlook/attitude – use your exam example and how you coached others into being positive and addressing the challenge.

      • Analytical – actuary product review example from your internship.

      • Dependable/helpful/loyal – your example from Huatai where you would often stay late and help other team members to finish their work.

      Areas for Improvement

      • Becoming familiar with the actuarial language within a work environment.

      • Taking responsibility for your own learning and doing some self-study.

      • Learning to clarify what colleagues are asking before agreeing to do it. This is your comment about needing to be more straight forward.

      Questions for your interviewer

      • If it is Mike, ask him about his own story. How has he found it coming from an IT background. What are his thoughts on how tech has influenced the profession?

      • Brexit – ask him how well prepared he thinks they are. Remember, he might flip this back to you, so be prepared with your answer.

Finally as you suggested, you should ask your classmates who were on the programme last year about their experiences. This might provide you with some more question material for Mike.

I think you are well prepared and it should be a good discussion with Mike tomorrow. As we discussed it is only 30 minutes and so most likely he will focus on the classic motivation type questions:

why do you want to be an actuary; why Lloyds Banking Group (remember that it is not just Scottish Widows); why this programme; and why do you fit the role?

Remember the key theme that we have talked about throughout the two sessions:

try to focus as much as you can on the uniqueness of your answers and try to always relate them back to the role for which you are applying.

    • Standard Life Aberdeen Assessment Centre

Interview

      • why SLA

      • why risk & compliance

      • what you know about SLA

      competency

      • multiple deadlines

      • integrity

      • collaborate

      • help team member

      二 Group exercise

Case study

ESG investment; Millennials; Technology for job

    • Assessment Centre准备-Standard Life Aberdeen

      https://www.finews.com/news/english-news/33347-gam-whistleblower-tim-haywood-sanjeev-gupta-arbf

      https://www.finews.com/news/english-news/34221-tim-haywood-suspension-gam-disciplinary-procedure-investigation-whistleblower

      https://www.bloombergquint.com/markets/gam-scandal-sees-fund-manager-lose-4-5-billion-in-recent-weeks#gs.BuYHmKzv

This evening we talked about Standard Life Aberdeen. You already know a bit about the company but I would recommend you read the links below (and then answer the commercial awareness questions).

Ahead of our session, I had sent you 3 articles on a Compliance problem at GAM that became a massive problem and eventually caused the CEO to resign and billions of dollars of outflows.

Your task before our next session will be to answer the following two questions (5-10 lines each):

1)what could the GAM compliance department have done to better prevent the breach of company policy ?

      • increase the frequency of regular compliance check

      • increase the compliance education for employees

      • encourage employees to expose others' misconduct

      • write down exact procedures and make sure the procedure is strictly followed

      • make sure customers know the exact procedures

2)what could GAM (both the company and the compliance department) have done differently once the story broke out that a fund manager had been suspended ?

      • let him continue trading but investigate at the same time

      • restrict the rumour by all means since it breaks the customers' confidence

      • make sure other managers help the fund when a fund manager had been suspended

      • make the whole thing totally internal

第1点很多时候都不行,需要depend on the specific law;2点没答到点子,是想什么方法制止rumour;3点还行,总体需要more professionally

      1 Motivation

1)Why did you choose the Risk and Compliance programme?

Challenging and learning opportunity; An actuary coach at SLA; A risk analyst friends

2)Why do you want to work for Standard Life Aberdeen ?

During my research (investment trainee case study below), positive, friendly and supportive atmosphere; training and learning opportunities; Strength Finder session - discover the natural ability (1:1 meeting with a strengths coach)
One of the top 50 social mobility employers; inclusion and diversity
Global location; one of the largest asset management firms around the world.
career fair; an actuary in SLA

3)Why did you choose your degree?

enjoy studying mathematics; enjoy applying statistics and mathematics in the financial world; actuaries-life learning

      2 Competency

1)Tell me a time when you had to deal with a situation that something went out of plan.

      S: last semester;

      T: mix of projects with tight deadline, final exam revise, dissertation first draft;

      A: write down all things - prioritise - make use of every available time;

R+L: good grade in both projects and final exam, finish first draft on time; time management skills, exercise and meditation

2)Tell me a situation when your work was criticised and how you responded.

S: actuarial summer intern last summer

T: submit an unsigned actuarial product review

A: apologise and contact regulator, make copy as soon as possible and signed and submit; write review and actions to improve in the future

R+L: approved. careful and rectify problems quickly

3)Tell me a time when you questioned a process that you thought would not give the best outcome.

      S: student union

T: two weekly meeting and one department meeting

A: write a proposal to the president, outline the pros and cons; persuade other members of student union to agree with the proposal

R+L: one weekly meeting, improve efficiency. how to persuade others and explanation

      4)Tell be about a time when you were unhappy or not confident with a piece of work you had to deliver under a tight timeframe;

      • There’s no substitute for first-hand fundamental research.
      • A strong focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations can enhance long-term returns and reduce risk.

      第二场

We continued with our preparation for Standard Life Aberdeen ("SLA").

We started by checking your answers to the questions I had asked you about the compliance story at GAM.

These were good, you seemed worried that you had not found enough answers but the ones you had were fine.

However, we practiced the skill of finding answers to a specific problem in a very short amount of time, as you seemed to be giving quite short answers in some case:

      We looked at:

      • being a project manager and choosing a new team.
      • choosing between certain tasks (based on limited information).
      • finishing a project with the highest quality in 3 months when it normally takes 6.

我没有答道increase the size of the team & use more team members with past experience,仅仅想到个人的问题,还需提升

      • what new technologies to use in the compliance area.

The idea here was to make sure write as many bullet points in a short period of time. This should help you come up with quick thoughts, in a way that is required for the case studies or group exercises at the SLA assessment centre.

You had some difficulty at first but it was easier in the last few exercises and I believe it should help in coming up with more ideas at the assessment centre.

In preparation for our next session, I am sending you three articles:

      • one McKinsey article to read and that we will discuss as in the Group Exercise format. Do not read the whole thing but the "1. An expanded role of compliance and active ownership of the risk-and-control framework" part only.

      https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/risk/our-insights/a-best-practice-model-for-bank-compliance

      • an interview of Martin Gilbert (former head of Aberdeen Asset Management, now co-CEO of the newly-formed Standard Life Aberdeen). Read it and write down bullet points on things that define his personality and how this could be unique to SLA (and differentiate it from its competitors).

Interview: Martin Gilbert, Standard Life Aberdeen – Daily Business Magazine

      • an article on a Fund Manager that broke rules and found himself out of a job. We will discuss the compliance implications of this case, although as a case study/ group exercise.

      https://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/london-life/how-did-the-city-slicker-dodge-43000-in-train-fares-and-did-one-of-his-fellow-commuters-shop-him-9653637.html

      Feedback:

We also practiced additional cases/ group exercises and I realised you come up with a lot more ideas when you use pen and paper rather than express them directly verbally. Think about that for the assessment centre. If you have the opportunity to make lists of thought on paper, definitely take it. It should make a difference.

We finished by practicing all the commercial awareness questions and I gave some additional information on the fund strategies: passive, active, alternative as well as the names of some of the funds SLA manages.

Regarding feeling nervous ahead of the assessment centre, try instead to focus on the things you do well just ahead instead: writing nice thoughts and ideas on paper, explaining your achievements in interview questions.

interview --> diagram problems --> report writing --> lunch break --> presentation --> group exercise

1-Why choose AXA, why this role

      2-What’s your strengths and weaknesses

      我说自己喜欢challenges,喜欢take on responsibilities;缺点是impatient,push others

      3-The actuary path

      4-why you

      5-competency

      5.1-describe a difficult time

5.2-describe a time when you came up with a creative solution

6- how many people take flights in London over 24 hours period

      (二)diagrammatic question

      (三)report writing

      (四)lunch break

Presentation

Group exercise

(2)-Situational Judgement Test

一般就有"describe a challenging project/problem and how you solve it" "describe a successful team work" "describe your greatest achievement"......

      3、video interview

      4、phone interview

      5、Structure

I learn ... from the process.",可以把 R 改成 R+L+F,结果+学到什么+feedback。

      I have a passion for

      I am interested in

      What attracts me the most

      I think/ assume/ suppose

      但是!都到这个份上了不把握机会就不是我了(喵的干了那么多网申+刷题+面试)。

      所以,研究了很久人人闻之发抖的AC,再实践了两把,发现,没那么难嘛,满满的套路呀!

      到底谁跟我说AC难于上青天来着,害得我还小紧张一把。

      接下来,分为三篇:

      • 一讲讲AC的详细信息和一些考量的重点;

      • 二讲讲我去Willis Towers Watson实操的经验和教训;

      • 三讲讲我去Scottish Widow实操的经验和教训。

      先给一个我觉得讲AC最靠谱的网站:

      Assessment centres advice

      这篇文章分为:

      • 第一部分:大概

      • 第二部分:群面

      • 第三部分:工作情景演练

      废话不多说~马上开始!

      一. AC大概介绍

      1.契合度

It is important to remember that the assessment centre is just a way of finding candidates suitable for a role; you are not in competition with the other candidates at the assessment centre.

      1)Communication

      2)Teamwork

      3)Leadership

      4)Customer focus

      5)Influencing(persuading)

      6)Problem solving

      7) Achieving results

      最后的报告是否能让评委满意,也挺考表达能力的(最后的presentation)。

      上次我忘词了,本来10分钟,只讲了2分钟,尴尬得要命,还照着念,一定一定下次记住不要照着念和记住自己的部分(伤心)。

      还有其他的例如structure,是否讨论的时候逻辑清晰;visual aid,是否有画图表帮助理解;decision making,是否做出很好的决定等等。

      但其实,据我观察,中国学生的两个缺点很明显:

      • 第一:阅读和听力理解速度跟不上本地人,开始讨论的时候还没看完,听讨论太快了又没听懂。这个要改进的话真得好好集中精力,认真听,相信还是可以的;

      • 第二:没自信说出自己想法,在心里憋着,怕自己语法错误或者啥的。这个真要好好调整自己的状态,一定要自信,大方,开朗地陈述自己的意见,不要怕错,错了又咋地。

      所以说,多多练习,集中精力,不要怕错,自信一点,相信自己可以的。

      经过两次AC,别的不说,还是把群面练好了点。

      二. 群面

      英国的群面,跟中国的群面,唯一的不同——他是英文的。

      虽说就这个不同,但是你的反应能力,插话能力,语言表达能力都会大打折扣。

      再加上很多公司材料又给得很厚,早上起早了头脑不清醒,一不留神就走神了。

      所以,得练。

      一般考量的方面:

        1. Analytical Thinking
        1. Achieving Goals
        1. Assertiveness
        1. Creativity
        1. Interpersonal Effectiveness
        1. Oral Communication
        1. Teamwork

Overall, they are assessing how you will perform in everyday working life, which involves getting on with people in a group.

        1. Are you taking on board everyone's input?(每个人的意见都要考量)
        1. What balance do you strike between letting go insignificant asides and making sure everyone agrees on important issues?(如何让讨论不偏离轨道)
        1. How do you deal with quiet people?(鼓励小透明)
        1. Would the discussion benefit from some structure, and how are you for time?(讨论的框架是否有逻辑,是不是看到哪里就扯哪里)
        1. Are you talking for talking's sake? (是否为了说而说,只想展现自己) Has your contribution helped solve the problem?(你有贡献自己的意见吗)
        1. Do you criticise or encourage input from others?(评论别人意见的能力)
        1. How convincing are you? Do you speak with conviction?(是否论据有道理)
        1. Can you think on your feet when presented with an issue?(从什么角度说出自己想法)
        1. Can you recognise a good idea, and how do you tactfully deal with weak ideas?(区分好的和不好的想法)
        1. Do you take time to contemplate the problem or are you too busy talking?(又没有思考自己的方案是否可行)
        1. Have the group strayed from the original exercise brief?(有没有偏题)

In general terms, in-tray exercises test your ability to:

Demonstrate the level of knowledge appropriate to the job for which you're applying

Display the skills necessary for the job

Show that your attitudes are a good fit for those specified for the role

You might, for instance, be told to imagine that it’s your first day in your job as a stock controller, and be handed a stack of documents and tasks to prioritise and action. You might be given this role even if you’re applying for a job that has nothing to do with stock control; similarly, you might be asked to imagine yourself as a teacher or a lawyer, even if you’re applying for a quite different job.

Another common scenario is that you’ve just returned from annual leave to find a pile of correspondence in your fictional in-tray. The point is that the skills and attitudes being assessed will be relevant to the job you’re applying for; the types of issues and problems you’re asked to consider will be similar to those involved in that role.

      • How many in-tray items will there be?

It’s usual to be given between ten and thirty in-tray items to work on, in addition to a description of your role and responsibilities in the fictional organisation. You’ll also normally be given information about the fictional organisation’s aims, objectives and problems, as well as its structure; a list of key fellow employees; and information about key third party organisations and relationships, as well as a calendar of future events. The best candidate will keep all of these things in their mind whilst responding to the in-tray items. So there's a lot to get through in the hour or so you usually get allowed!

      • How will my in-tray exercise be assessed?

The two most common ways in which your response to the in-tray items will be assessed are via (a) your response to questions in a multiple choice format, or (b) your performance in an interview with an assessor in which you need to explain and justify your actions and decisions. Sometimes, you will be assessed via a combination of these methods.

Before you start, you should be sure to check how you’ll be assessed, and whether or not you’re allowed to write on your in-tray items. If you know you will not have the opportunity to talk through your answers with an assessor at the end, make sure you write down everything you have thought of otherwise you won't get the marks for it. Make a note of diary clashes, time commitments, resource constraints, appointments, interactivity between people...anything you think is important to consider in your answer.

      • What's the best way to approach an in-tray exercise?

Remember that it’s crucial that you identify the key issues arising from the in-tray items: while you should aim to complete every task in the limited time allotted, do not lose sight of prioritising more important tasks. You’ll be assessed, after all, not simply on your ability to get things done quickly, but on your ability to spot whether some tasks are more urgent than others, and on the balance you strike between working quickly and working effectively.

The best approach is to quickly read through every item in your in-tray before answering any questions. But do make notes on your thoughts as you read through each item. It's best to wait until you have read everything before responding because an item which comes up might affect how you react to an earlier item, or even contradict it. The assessor will not look favourably on you just ploughing in to the questions.

Whatever the topics covered, and whatever the nature of your fictional job, all in-tray exercises assess your ability to sort through, take in and analyse complex information efficiently even under pressure of time; your ability to explore and identify key issues and prioritise your work accordingly; and your ability to communicate effectively about the decisions you’ve made and to identify any special problems or issues that arise from the set of tasks and documents you’re given. You’ll also be assessed on how clearly and effectively you can explain your decisions and actions.

So, although you’ll be asked to imagine that you’re at work when carrying out the exercise, it’s crucial not to underestimate the importance of communicating your thought processes to your assessors. As mentioned earlier, you need to show what you know in order to be given credit for your responses – so, you must be clear about the reasons behind your actions and decisions.

Remember that your attitudes are being assessed, too: because of this, pay attention to how you present yourself during the exercise – including how you organise your desk area, how neat your notes are, and whether you display a frantic or rather calmer approach to dealing with the in-tray items!

Be aware that many in-tray exercises have a central “theme” to them that you’re expected to identify: this might be the fact that a merger or takeover of your fictional organisation is imminent, or perhaps that a major re-structuring is on the cards. It’s important to identify anything like this because it will enhance your understanding of your fictional role, and affect the way in which you evaluate and prioritise tasks and information, as well as influence your decisions.

      • Tips for performing well in your in-tray exercise

As well as keeping in mind what type of job you’re being assessed for, and so which particular competency you should display, it’s important to work in as organised and logical manner as you can.

Try to approach the exercise in an orderly manner, ensuring that you neither miss out anything nor spend too long on any one task. One great strategy is to scan through every in-tray item right at the start of the exercise, and to sort them into an order than makes sense (whether it’s chronological, or perhaps topic-based) – keeping an eye out for items that affect each other. You should be especially alert to items that have perhaps already been dealt with (so you no longer have to worry about them), and also to items that are in need of particularly urgent attention.

Despite the pressure of time, you need to play close attention to details – including the names of key personnel, the date of each document, and actions that have already been taken that might affect your decisions.

Also remember to show what you know, rather than assuming that an assessor will credit you with characteristics that you do not actually display during the exercise. So, for instance, be sure to make notes of reasons for your decisions, and to explain your thought processes either during the role-play, or in the test or interview following it.

Key to success is keeping calm as you go through the in-tray items, and being methodical in your approach to handling them. Making brief notes in relation to each decision you make is important, too – especially if an assessor asks you to explain one of your decisions, but also to ensure you don’t lose track of what you’re doing as well as how and why you’re prioritising the tasks you need to do.

One final word of advice for your in-tray exercise: be sure to take into account the personality and style of the fictional organisation you’re asked to imagine working for. Then ensure that your actions, decisions and any “work” you produce reflect your awareness. It might be that your role-play requires you to be highly independent, or, alternatively, to be very much a team player – but in either case, be sure and do your best to show your ability to “fit” with the organisation for which you’re pretending to work. This is important to employers, and is something you should consider in any recruitment situation.

Our eight essential in-tray exercise tips for success

When you take your in-tray exercise, remember our handy hints for getting the best scores. There are several tactics for performing well in your in-tray exercise but the most important thing to do is to take an example exercise yourself. Below we have listed our best tips for your next in-tray exercise.

In-tray Exercise Tip 1: Write down ALL of your observations

Assessors can award you marks only for the observations you write down or those which you explain to them. A common mistake candidates make is to not write down that they have deliberately left an item to come back to later, only to find they have run out of time. Quite correctly, candidates will deal with the more urgent and important items first but if they don't make it clear why something has been left the assessor can only assume you didn't know what to do with it!

In-tray Exercise Tip 2: Think about the proximity of your in-tray appointments

In your in-tray will be lots of items requiring your attendance, such as meetings, conferences, awards ceremonies and social events. Part of being a good organiser and planner is to take note of the locations of these various engagements and their time to decide if it's possible to go to more than one. For example two events either side of lunch might be at opposite ends of the country and so in your answers you should not agree to attending both. Similarly, two events might be in the same building and so you would be expected to notice this and respond accordingly.

In-tray Exercise Tip 3: Note the significance of the originator/receiver of communication

Some of the correspondence in your in-tray might be from the managing director of your organisation, some might be from a client, some might be a cold-calling sales representative.

Do you give the same level of priority to all of these? Of course not, so always have in your mind who is who and from where the correspondence originated. This is a common way for in-tray exercises to test your prioritisation skills.

In-tray Exercise Tip 4: Pay attention to the date you received correspondence in your in-tray

Your in-tray exercise will include correspondence from different times and dates. Has an urgent request been sitting in the in-tray for some time thus meaning it is now very urgent? When someone refers to for example "by the end of next week", you need to notice the date of sending for this to have significance.

Read through all your in-tray items before attempting your first question because you might well find that a later piece of correspondence contradicts or negates earlier messages. Decide if each piece of correspondence warrants an urgent response or if it can wait.

In-tray Exercise Tip 5: Imagine yourself actually faced with your in-tray items in real life

Your in-tray exercise is as much a test of role-play than of your attitudes because you have to treat the exercise like it is real if you want to perform your best. In a simulated environment it's easy to slip into the trap of sticking to rigid responses, or answering how you think you should answer. When in fact if you had faced a similar situation in real life you would have taken a more realistic practical approach.

An example to illustrate this point is coming across a broken bridge over a river. In a test situation you might think along the lines of constructing a new crossing from branches, or fixing the broken bridge with rope etc. But in reality aren't you more likely to just get out your iPhone and use Google Maps to see if there is another bridge nearby?

In-tray Exercise Tip 6: Think carefully about delegation during your in-tray exercise

Another skill your in-tray exercise will be assessing is your ability to effectively delegate, in the right situation to the right person. The extent to which you should delegate tasks depends on what your fictional role is within the fictional organisation. For a manager you would be expected to delegate all but the most strategic tasks, whereas a new recruit would be expected to carry out most of the tasks themselves and get it checked by someone more senior.

You will be marked down if you do not delegate enough, but equally if you delegate too much. You should consider if the task is suitable for your fictional role, and if not consider delegating it.

Consider also if an event requires you to be there in person or if you can delegate it out. You might first think it appropriate to delegate a more menial task, but is there another reason you should be there in person?

In-tray Exercise Tip 7: The most important piece of advice is to practise an example in-tray exercise

You can read about in-tray exercises but the most effective way to actually improve your performance is to take an example exercise yourself. By sitting one for yourself and going through the thought process you will become familiar with what to look out for, and how to deal with each item in your in-tray.

In-tray Exercise Tip 8: Lay out your in-tray items in a logical sequence

If you are taking your in-tray exercise at an assessment centre, you will usually take it alone in a room with a desk. Read through all the in-tray items once and as you do place them on the desk in a logical order. This will help when you come back to them and answer questions on them. For example lay them out left to right in the order you read them, placing urgent items higher than less urgent items. You might find a different method works best for you.

Apart from being a help to you, if an assessor sees the neat arrangement of items on your desk, they may be impressed with your methodical and logical strategy.

      tips:

      • make notes of priority and details like date

      • mast tell the assessor what is in your mind

      • priority, delegate jobs in right person

      WTW:

      • Knowledge for WTW and the position you applied

      • What skills can you provide for WTW

      • Tell me a time when you were in a high-performance team

      • Tell me a time when you suggested to improve a process, procedure, product, and etc.

      Aon:

      • Why Aon and this area

      • a time to achieve good results with a difficult team member

      • a time to improve a procedure... (Yes! Same to WTW)

      • Describe yourself, why you suit for this role

      • 提前准备问题,关于这些问题是一定会出的:this company, this role, teamwork, your ability and contributions...

      第二项:networking和Q&A

Case study

      Rob
